Thomas Cole (1801-1848) lived in England until he was 17, when his family moved to Ohio in the US where he continued his artistic training at the Philadelphia Academy of Art. He helped found the Hudson River School, a group of artists who shared a love of the American landscape and tried to capture its grandeur on canvas. In later years he travelled to Europe to study the works of the great landscape masters.
