Franz Marc (1880-1916) originally studied theology but turned to art in 1900, studying at Munich University. During his time in Munich he became involved in the German Art Noveau movement known as Jugendstil. He is generally regarded as an exponent of the German Expressionist movement but by the end of his career his work was closer in style to the Abstract movement. Marc believed in the spirituality of animals and often used animal subjects for his work. His career was cut short when he died in 1916 during military service. There is a good collection of his work in Munich , others are in Leicester, Minneapolis, New York (Guggenheim) and several German galleries.
